Man Kills Wife, Hangs Self As His Children Watch


Rift Valley, Kenya: A husband went berserk in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha killing his wife before taking his life as his children watched.
The man in his late 50s committed suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom, hours after strangling his wife.
The man said to be a sand harvester had earlier quarreled with the mother of four resulting in a fight.
In the bizarre incident, the man was rescued by his two children after he tried to hang himself only to later on lock himself and take his life.
Emotions run high as relatives and friends crowded the three roomed house before police collected the bodies.
Inside the bedroom there were signs of commotion as personal effects were littered all over and the body of the woman dumped in a corner.
According to the son Kevin Mburu, the couple had on various occasions clashed over the woman’s drunkenness.
An emotional Mburu narrated how he was called in the morning by his sister following a night fight between the couple.
“I found my dad with a rope and my mother lying in a corner covered in blankets and I knew something was wrong,” he said.
The form three student said that he left to change for school only for the father to move in and try committing suicide but they rushed back and rescued him.
“He asked for water and as we went to the kitchen to collect it, he locked himself in the bedroom and hanged himself,” said Mburu.
A neighbour Hannah Njeri told how she had been called by the couple’s children after the duo quarreled overnight.
“The two have had domestic quarrels and we never thought that the man could go this far,” said the shocked neighbor.
Speaking on phone, Naivasha OCPD Charles Kortok confirmed the incident saying that investigations had started.
“Initial investigations indicate that the man killed his wife before taking his life and the bodies have been taken to area mortuary,” he said.
