Williams Sisters Edge Towards Final

The Williams sisters are one step closer to facing each other in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship final after they won their respective semifinals against Jelena Jankovic and Flavia Pennetta on Thursday.

Serena delivered another solid performance, losing only four games in her straight sets victory over Jancovic.

Venus had to work harder than her sibling, who recorded a 6-2 6-2 win, facing a fiesty Penetta who improved as the match progressed.

Despite a valiant fightback, the Italian would eventually lose the second set 7-5, having earlier lost the first 6-3.

Venus won the Dubai tournament in 2009 and 2010 before skipping the next three iterations while fighting illness.

Asked about the prospect of facing her sister, Venus said: "I think that would be fantastic, but we both have to get there first. I would like both of us to get there, so we'll see."

Venus has been drawn against Caroline Wozniacki in the last four, after the Dane progressed courtesy of a 6-2 6-2 win over Romania's Sorana Cirstea.

Serena will take on Anna Cornett, who secured a 7-5 6-3 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro, in the other semifinal.

The last time the sisters met in a final was at the 2009 Tour Championships in Doha.

Serena banked a straight sets win on that occasion.
