So What If I’m 14… Things You Must Not Do at a Teenage Party in Nigeria

Demilade Aina
Hello guys. Sorry for not putting up an article last week, I had exams so I was busy studying but thankfully I’m done with them now. Fingers crossed, that I do well.
By the way, I’m also very pleased with the response from my last post which you can check HERE. It’s very nice that people think that there’s sense in what I write because sometimes I feel like I’m blabbing and that I contradict myself.
Now we all know how little children parties are, they play ‘musical chairs’, ‘do as I do’, ‘fashion parade’ and all that. Afterwards, they do dancing competition then eat jollof rice and cake, take their party pack and go home. On the other hand, adult parties are of two varieties. It’s either an all nighter with lots of booze and dancing or it’s a classy affair with people coming to say nice things about the celebrant or couple or celebrant where there’ll be soft music and different types of food. We all know about all these types of parties but what do you all know about teenage parties? Let me enlighten you.
Most teen parties usually start around 4 PM and sometimes 6 PM. Most of them end at around 10PM or sometimes way after midnight which is really baffling because who lets a 14 year old stay out that late! I know my parents will never ever let me do that but I’ve come to realise that different parents have different priorities. Of course, at these parties there’s always a lot of music and dancing. Not your typical kind of dancing, there’s usually grinding, Google it if you don’t know what it means. Also, lots of people go all lovey dovey with their boyfriends. I’ve actually seen loads of pictures with the girl sitting on the boy’s lap and both of them giggling and stuff, makes me want to gag to be honest. There’s hardly any food because the main aim of the party is to socialize, hook up and dance.
Some older teens (the 16, 17 year olds) actually smoke and drink at their parties but I’m not in their age group so I really can’t say. Now these parties can be very fun and it’s not all bad but you just have to know what you’re doing. When I go to parties, most of the time I just dance. I really don’t care about sitting on someone or guzzling alcohol trying to feel cool with myself. I love to dance so I ALWAYS dance. It’s just really fun.
Some people go to all these parties and just get bloody wasted. I remember one picture of one party that I was looking at on Twitter, I don’t know whether the guy drank too much or grinded too much but he actually passed out on the floor and people put pictures of him on the internet to mock him. That’s the major problem with these parties, the pictures. People, especially the girls don’t want their pictures taken while they grind and kiss boys because they know the pictures will end up on Twitter and Tumblr but they still do it anyways and end up regretting it. I really don’t know why girls do things like that. The people you’re dancing with, you might not even know them but you let them grab you and when the pictures surface online and everyone else (including the boy) is laughing at you, you get mortified and call them cruel. That’s just disgusting. I’m not saying I’m one holy holy girl that is perfect because really I’m not, I’m guilty of a lot of things but definitely not of this because I rarely go to parties and when I do I just daaannnccceee.
My only advice is this; if you want to grind or anything don’t let them take your picture but then again you may get so caught up with your ‘boo’ that you might not notice someone taking your picture so just don’t do all that stuff. Don’t do it. You’re not a prude if you don’t. I don’t do stuff like that, my friends don’t do it either. You can’t call us prudes, I mean we are fine girls. We’re very fine in fact.
