Subscribers lament imposition of extra tariff by MTN dealers

OWERRI—Mobile telephone users in Imo State have cried out over
alleged extra tariff slammed on them by MTN, and its authorised
distributors and agents in the state.

Ivestigations revealed that recharge card dealers now
charge extra N10 for every N100 recharge card purchased by any
subscriber in the state.
It was also gathered that the extra but illegal tax, which started last
December and has continued at the time of going to press, grows as
the recharge card purchaser increases his demand.
A youth corps member serving in the state, Mr. Olusola Isaac, lamented
what he described as hide and seek game of the telecom operator and
its agents.
His words: “It is sad that MTN is not giving any sort of explanation to
this ugly situation. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC,
and the Consumer Protection Commission, CPC, have equally
maintained a demeaning silence over this ugly development.”
A recharge card retailer, Mrs. Tina Iwuala, explained that recharge card
printers now sell the N100 brick for N980 as against the previous N960.
