Niger State Govt to Give 37,000 free Uniforms to Students -



Niger state Government on Friday said it will commence the distribution of free uniforms to students in secondary schools throughout the state from this term.

Government in the first phase of the project will distribute 37,000 pairs of uniforms to Junior Secondary school 1 students.

The Commissioner for Education Alhaji Danladi Umar Abdulhamid who disclosed this in Minna on while addressing news men at the end of the State executive council meeting said that government will spend over N55m on the project.

According to him "government has already paid 50% of the total contract sum to the contractor awarded the contract and each student will get the type of uniform being used by their schools".

The Commissioner said the success of the programme will lead eventually to the supply of uniforms to all categories of students in public schools throughout the state.

Similarly, the Commissioner said to improve the learning of mathematics which is a core subject the government has awarded contract for the supply of ‘Brain Builder’ A (1) mathematics text books which will be given free of charge to all category of students in the state.

The N15m contract Abdulhamid said is different from the policy of government which ensures the distribution of text and books in major subjects to all students in public schools in the state.

In the meantime, the State Government in a bid to improve its internally generated revenue IGR has decided to establish what it called a ‘Commonwealth Fund’.

The Commissioner for Information Professor Mohammed Kuta Yahaya who disclosed this while addressing a news conference said that the Commonwealth fund will enable the government to ‘save for the future, and generate more resources for the State’.

According to Kuta "the Fund will have two components, future generation and investment support programme; and a legal framework for the operation of the fund will also be put in place.

He also emphasised that the Commonwealth Fund will have a board which will to a large extent be independent.

The Commissioner who said that the fund which will generate funds from ‘diverse sources’ will be flagged off ‘very soon by Governor Babangida Aliyu
