A Cairo court on Monday sentenced 19 students accused of rioting during clashes between supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi and security forces in December to five years imprisonment.
The students, all from the al-Azhar University which was a stronghold of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, were also fined 14,358 dollars (about N2.3 million) each.
Egypt’s universities have seen a wave of unrest since October in protests which initially involved Morsi supporters but which broadened in Cairo University.
This was after an Engineering student was shot dead, apparently by police, during a protest in late November.
It said government last week postponed the start of the new university term from Feb. 22 to March 8, citing security concerns.
The report said the sentences on the accused rioters came as a court for urgent issues ordered that the Interior Ministry’s campus security force be re-established in response to the unrest.
