NLC Denies Fraud, Leadership Crisis

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday challenged anyone with proof of corruption allegation, levelled against its leadership, to come forward and reveal it.
Malam Abduwaheed Omar, the NLC President, was reacting to an allegation that the leadership of the Congress was enmeshed in leadership crisis and fraud.
In an interview in Abuja, Omar said: ``The NLC did not pay any money into the account of its officials, neither are we sponsored by any agency of government.
``Those making the allegation should come out with proof or publish the receipt in order to substantiate their claims.’’
He said that the seminar for the National Administrative Council (NAC) members in Dubai was one of the congress’s educational programmes for its members.
He explained that all organisations, including the unions, use the training of members to develop their capacity and so does NLC.
He explained that the training was to build the capacity of its members noting that ``such training are held anywhere within or outside the country.
``This congress takes the issue of training and re-training of its members seriously.’’
Omar added that there was a budget for education of its members, hence, the issue of being bribed or sponsored by government or any agency does not arise.
`` Going for training or seminar outside the country is not uncommon in unions and labour circles.
``We would not accept the pulling down of our efforts when we are coming out with positive innovations.’’
Omar said that there was no leadership crisis in the congress stressing that all members of NAC were present at the training except for two people who were indisposed.
``We are already studying the report; we will take a critical look at the issues and allegations decide on what step to take to address the matter.
``This is a very serious allegation, especially against our leadership, hence, the congress may not rule out litigation,’’ Omar said.
